Amazon.co.uk Review:
Leave it to the wildly inventive Coen brothers (Joel directs, Ethan produces, they both write) to concoct a fiendishly clever kidnap caper that's simultaneously a comedy of errors, a Midwestern satire, a taut suspense thriller and a violent tale of criminal misfortune. It all begins when a hapless car salesman (played to perfection by William H. Macy) ineptly orchestrates the kidnapping of his own wife. The plan goes horribly awry in the hands of bumbling bad guys Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare (one of them being described by a local girl as "kinda funny lookin'" and "not circumcised"), and the pregnant sheriff of Brainerd, Minnesota, (played exquisitely by Frances McDormand in an Oscar-winning role) is suddenly faced with a case of multiple murders. Her investigation is laced with offbeat observations about life in the rural hinterland of Minnesota and North Dakota, and Fargo embraces its local yokels with affectionate humour. At times shocking and hilarious, Fargo is utterly unique and distinctly American, bearing the unmistakable stamp of its inspired creators. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

On the DVD:Fargo, Special Edition presents the movie in anamorphic widescreen (16:9) with Dolby 5.1 available in a choice of English, French or Spanish. Extras include a rare 20-minute interview with the Coens and Frances McDormand, dating from the time of the movie's release, and the 27-minute retrospective documentary, "Minnesota Nice", which has more interviews with the principal cast and crew. There's a "Coen Brothers' Family Tree" listing actors who have collaborated with the duo, and an on-screen trivia track which, among other nuggets, provides a history of pancakes after Peter Stormare's character famously demands "Where is pancakes house?". Cinematographer Roger Deakins provides an intermittent commentary mostly concerned with technical issues. The text of an American Cinematographer article about Deakins and the Coens, trailers and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery complete the package. --Mark Walker

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - What they DONT TELL YOU
I loved the movie Fargo. I thought it was one of the the most brilliant exposes of the uselessness and stupidity of violence, and the nature of selfishness, ever put to screen.

YET...of vital importance is the fact that this DVD does NOT contain the film that won the Oscars.

This version of the film has edited almost every scene with the kidnapped victim, Jerry Lundegaard's wife, and the two idiot criminals, Carl and Gaear. I assume that this is been done because this ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Subtle brilliance
Critics who say that 'Fargo' is the Coen Brothers' greatest film might have apoint.
Fargo is a very interesting and subtley funny film. The dialogue is very good and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
It isn't an upbeat, feel good film, if that's what you like in a film- but it is a film that you must see at some point in your life, so it may as well be now. Frances Mcdormand plays a wonderful character and I am very fond of Steve Buscemi.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Dull
Saw this in the cinema back in the day and ranks as one of the worst films I have ever seen. The only funny element is William H Macy's proscrastinating car saleman scene - everything else is utterly tedious. At end of the film we both turned to each other with the expression 'Is that it?'. Perhaps the humour and accents just don't translate on this side of the altantic. Don't waste your time on this one.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good? - You Betcha!
A very entertaining black comedy, this follows a seemingly ordinary car salesman who has a debt problem and hatches a plot to solve it. Naturally, things don't go according to plan...

Set in a wintery Minnesota, the landscapes are large, bleak and cold, with some interesting camerawork emphasising this. There are some great characters, particularly Marge the cop, hapless Jerry and the two hitmen. The dialogue and accents are apparently reflective of the area, with a lot of "Ya, You ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great transfer of the Coens' classic
Fargo on Blu-Ray is a genuine pleasure. For a 15 year old film there is very respectable depth and plasticity in close-ups. The film is not grain-free (good, this means no DNR!) but grain is never unsightly or intrusive. Colours and contrasts are good, but not perfect, the glaring white of the snow can cause the odd problem at times, but generally there is nothing unworthy of the BD standard.

The 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio soundtrack offers a perfect balance between dialogue and effects/music, ... Read More
