- Don't make them like this anymoreThis has been an absolute favorite for many years. I was replacing a vhs. The acting was spot on & I enjoyed the interview with Celia's daughter very much. I'll probably watch it once a year at least.

- You Won't Buy This Unless You Like PeopleHuman, touching and dated but strung out across the decades it remains a much loved statement of British post war society and the tensions felt by the English middle class when men and women interact. Such a deep connection is implied around the trappings of the time (the Cockney guard, the language, the matriarch running the station cafe). Its wonderful but I cannot imagine anyone who is not from Britain understanding it one bit. It is a seminar in hidden meaning within the English language and ... Read More

- A cinematic classicMake no mistake, David Lean's Brief Encounter is a cinematic classic for the right reasons - a moving, intelligent and finely crafted tale, bittersweet but romantic in its depiction of an unconsummated affair between two strangers, acted with understated sympathy by Johnson and Howard, and supported by a fine cast of British character actors, beautifully shot - almost in film noir style (compare to The Third Man, for example) - and making memorable and pioneering use of Rachmaninov's celebrated Piano ... - Not So Brief EncounterBought this dvd to take another look at the movie, having first seen it when invited by ex-girlfriend one St Valentine's Day. Enjoyed the movie more second time time around, and the realisation that I failed to get the movie's message first time around until recently prompted/challenged by said ex-girlfriend! Great story, wonderful nostalgia. Recommended without hesitation for romantic evening in by the fire.

- Over ratedA classic and hugely successful film of the British film industry, and quite rightly so, but in my opinion over rated.
It is a story of frustrated and unobtainable love and is a genuine weepy, and Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard are on top of their game in this one. Sadly some of the long heart rending and hand wringing dialogue between the two leads is tortuous and tiresome, and people just don't talk like that in the real world, not even in 30's and 40's Britain, except in films.
