- When you feel like British, no other film will do as well. The basic story is of a brief encounter between two people (Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson) at a train station. Both are married to other people and are committed to different lives. They fall in love; but it is a hopeless situation.
How will they resolve this?
Will they resolve this?
What would you do in the situation?
This film reminds me of a line I heard in another movie, he, "We will never have happiness." She, "Then we must be happy without it."

- All time classic on the latest technology! Finally on blu-ray, this is the story of an almost affair.
From an era of impeccable manners, British reserve and steam trains comes a small cast of huge impact.
Just above the Yorkshire dales came the homely husband - more intelligent and knowingly wise than he appears, the wife - searching for more excitement than domestic life can usually offer, and the dashing Doctor cutting a stylish opportunity for satisfying a need!

- A great Blu-Ray of a great filmDo not listen to the person who said this is less than great despite the claims of being image-conscious. I've seen 35mm prints that weren't as good as this Blu-Ray. - Classic given new lease of lifePointless to review this classic film for its story, performances, and direction which are all superb. What one can certainly marvel at is the sensational quality of the restored print. On Blu Ray Brief Encounter emerges with such clarity of detail such beautiful gradations of the black and white spectrum, that one simply marvels at the transformation. The soundtrack is also refurbished and this adds greatly to ones enjoyment of the performances.Anyone who loves this film and would like to see it in all its splendour ... Read More

- Good but not great digital restoration of classic romance.Brief Encounter [Blu-ray] [1945]
The Blu Ray version is a complete digital restoration by the BFI.
The result is good but not stunning, probably due to the available source material which is stated to have often been in poor condition.
If you are buying Brief Encounter for the first time this is the way to go, but an existing DVD version played with a good upscaler runs it pretty close.
I am extremely image conscious, but do not consider the cost of upgrading from DVD ... Read More
